The Avengers, or Avengers Assemble for those of us in the UK, came out a very long time ago, in 2012, when we were still very excited about the Olympics.
The movie did such a good job of connecting all the different parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that superhero movies would go on to rule the box office for the rest of the decade and beyond.
Having a group of superheroes you’ve seen in other movies work together to defeat a danger showed that these big ending movies to different Marvel “phases” could work.
Around the same time that The Avengers came out, Scarlett Johansson had an awkward interview where the person asking her if she wore underwear in the movie made her slap himself.
The interviewer asked Johansson and co-star Jeremy Renner about the outfits for the movie. The Black Widow star was asked, “Were you able to wear underwear under that outfit?”
Is there anyone who hasn’t seen the movie in a while? Johansson’s character wears something like a black spy outfit.
“You’re like the fifth person who has asked me that today,” the Jojo Rabbit star said in response. What’s going on? What?
“Since when did people start asking each other about, in interviews, about their underwear?”
When the reporter tried to tell her that he was asking because of her “skin tight” outfit, Johansson cut him off and said, “Let it be up to your imagination.” She also said that she was wearing “whatever you think I should be wearing or not wearing under that costume.”
Being aware that he had pretty much crossed a line, the reporter tried to find out if it was “inappropriate” to bring it up.
“To ask somebody what kind of underpants they wear?” She replied, and then she asked out loud, “What kind of interview is this?”
A lot of artists who play superheroes have been asked about the problems their costume might cause, but not many are asked if they could “wear undergarments” underneath it.
Usually, the actors talking about each other are laughing about telling the next person in line to make sure they can quickly take off the suit to go to the bathroom. They’re not talking about what they’re wearing underneath.
The interviewers of Cara Delevingne for the movie Paper Towns told her, “Why don’t you go take a little nap, maybe get a Red Bull?” This is just one example of an awkward interview that went on for too long.
Later, when asked about the negative reactions to the interview, the model said that things got lost in translation across the Atlantic.
